Tree & Free
Experience the chase without the harvest. Our Tree & Free adventures let you get up close to Idaho’s wildest predators — mountain lions and bears — while keeping it strictly catch and release.
Join our seasoned houndsmen and their well-trained dogs as they track fresh sign, run the trail, and tree these incredible animals in Idaho’s rugged backcountry. You’ll see the dogs work just like on a hunt, but once the animal is treed, you’ll have the chance to watch, photograph, and appreciate it in its natural habitat before letting it go free.
Our Legendary Hound Training
Hunters from all over trust Big Timber Outfitters to train their hounds for bear and mountain lion hunts. Many clients fly their dogs in to work with our experienced handlers in Idaho’s rugged backcountry. Each dog learns on real tracks, building the nose, stamina, and grit needed to run game and tree it. We handle every dog with patience and respect to make sure it’s ready for the hunt.
What to Expect
At Big Timber Outfitters, our hunts are true Idaho backcountry adventures — rugged, remote, and unforgettable. You’ll ride horseback through steep timbered canyons and wild basins, tracking game like bears, mountain lions, elk, and deer alongside experienced guides and hardworking hounds.
Because we hunt deep in the wilderness where there’s no cell service, every hunter is required to carry a Garmin inReach for safety and peace of mind. Expect long days in the saddle, honest hard work, and the chance to see Idaho’s wildest country up close.
Camp & Hunting Conditions
Our camps are classic backcountry setups — comfortable wall tents with wood stoves, hearty meals, and plenty of good company. You’ll pack in and out on horseback, just like the old days, carrying everything you need.
After a long day in the field, relax around the fire, share stories, and soak in the beauty of the Idaho wilderness. It’s the kind of hunt you’ll remember for a lifetime.
