Whether you’re an experienced houndsman or just stepping into this style of hunting, Big Timber Outfitters gives you the option to run your own dogs or rely on our trained pack. Cougars (mountain lions) are quite abundant in this area, and with the right weather conditions, your chances for a successful hunt are very high. We’ll guide you through rugged country by 4-wheel drive, ATV, snowmobile, or horseback, reading tracks and working as a team to locate fresh sign. Once we cut a good track, our well-trained hounds go to work. The excitement of a hound pursuit is matched only by the thrill of harvesting your trophy cat.
What to Expect on Your Mountain Lion Hunt
Whether you’re an experienced houndsman or new to this style of pursuit, hunting mountain lions is a demanding adventure that will test your grit. Expect long days in rugged country, often covering miles by snowmobile, ATV, 4×4, or horseback — with the final push on foot through deep snow to reach your treed cat. Because you’ll be in remote terrain without cell service, we require every hunter to carry a Garmin inReach for your safety and peace of mind. When the dogs strike a fresh track, the real excitement begins — and there’s nothing quite like watching well-trained hounds work to tree a mountain lion in Idaho’s backcountry.
