Guided and DIY Elk Hunts
in the Rugged Backcountry of Idaho

Allocated Elk Tags, Exclusive Territory

No need to worry about drawing a tag.  Big Timber Outfitters has a set number of guaranteed elk tags allocated by the state of Idaho each year. These tags are specifically reserved for non-resident hunters booking through licensed outfitters like us, but they are limited, so spots fill up fast.

When you book a guided elk hunt with Big Timber, your tag is secured and waiting , no lottery, no hoping, no uncertainty, just a confirmed spot and a high-quality hunt in our exclusive area covering nearly 300 square miles of prime elk country.

Our hunts are 8 days total one day riding in, one day riding out, and six full days hunting in our controlled area, which limits the number hunters for a true backcountry experience.

Ride In, Settle In, Hunt Hard

Upon arrival at the trailhead, you’ll take a scenic 2–3 hour horseback ride along Big Timber Creek, deep into the heart of prime elk country. Our comfortable wall-tent camps are fully furnished with wood stoves to keep you warm after a long day in the field, and you’ll enjoy delicious home-cooked meals to keep you fueled for the hunt ahead.

With professional one-on-one guides by your side, you’ll hunt right from camp each day. You’ll have access to blinds, trails, wallows, and countless ridges, creeks, and meadows — whether you prefer to sit and wait or spot-and-stalk, you’ll be in the middle of hundreds of acres of prime backcountry elk habitat.

DIY Elk Hunts

Big Timber Outfitters supports DIY hunters by packing you in and out on horseback, providing comfortable wall-tent camps, food, and local knowledge of the land. You hunt on your own but get a solid head start with their guidance and camp support.

Guided Elk Hunts

For a more hands-on experience, go fully guided. You’ll have a dedicated guide, a guaranteed outfitter tag, and access to prime spots across their exclusive 300 square miles. Enjoy the same comfortable camp — plus expert help every step of the way.

What’s Expected?

Our elk hunts take place deep in Idaho’s wild country — rugged terrain, unpredictable weather, and limited to no cell service. This is a serious hunt, and the better prepared you are, the better your experience will be. A Garmin inReach device is required for all hunters. No exceptions.

Hunt Elk the Right Way

With Big Timber, you’re not just walking into elk country — you’re walking in with a team that knows where they are, how they move, and what it takes to get you close. Let’s make this your season.
